Happy 420, Arkansas! Next year, we hope we’ll be celebrating the new Arkansas Medical Marijuana program!!
Cannabis was reintroduced into British medicine in 1842 by Dr. William O’Shaughnessy, an army surgeon who had served in India. In Victorian times it was widely used for a variety of ailments, including muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, rheumatism, and the convulsions of tetanus, rabies and epilepsy; it was also used to promote uterine contractions in childbirth, and as a sedative to induce sleep. It is said to have been used by Queen Victoria against period pains: there is no actual proof of this at all, but Sir Robert Russell, for many years her personal physician, wrote extensively on cannabis, recommending it for use in dysmenorrhoea [menstrual cramps]. It was administered by mouth, not by smoking, but usually in the form of a tincture (an extract in alcohol).

Proponents of Legal Pot Get Closer to Goal
Despite the inflammatory headline, this wasn’t the worst coverage possible. Best of all, notice that 85% of people (when I last saw it) were “thrilled” about the story!?! That shows them what we already know—Arkansans are ready for this, the time is now.

“After a couple of years I lost a third of my body weight…My body was literally consuming itself…I’m a veteran right now who is facing homelessness now because…I simply sought to manage my care in the most effective, safe way possible.”

I was involved in a freak accident as a result of Cervical Stenosis and Central Cord Syndrome; I was paralyzed from the neck down. After a masterful surgery (cervical laminoplasty) I was able to wiggle my toes and smile. I was released from the hospital with thirteen different medications and told to begin physical therapy. My husband administered the medications as per the directions, I was in no pain but the side-effects were debilitating. I was in a drug induced state of incoherent semi reality. I couldn’t fathom the thought of six more months of this medication. My husband and I were directed by the “Pain Team” during my first follow up visit, to pursue all means of relief. We asked specifically about Medical MJ and again, we were advised to “pursue all means” to relieve the pain and minimize the side-effects.
My first visit to the Seattle Medical Marijuana Association office I was nauseous, shaking form the muscle spasms and in pain. The SMMA Staff immediately recognized my discomfort and began to administer a tincture they provide and gave me a piece of zucchini bread. The SMMA Staff were professional and compassionate. As we began to discuss the different options and methods of relief, my nausea was gone. I was so surprised at the speed of relief from the tincture, as barely ten minutes had passed. After nearly an hour consultation with the SMMA Staff, I was not shaking from the muscle spasms and my level of pain was negligible. I was fully coherent and felt like my old self. All THREE…Nausea, muscle spasms and pain had been treated with ONE medication!!!
I am so grateful for the option to choose Medical MJ and grateful to all the pioneers the field of Medical MJ who shed accurate light on the matter. I am no longer required to suffer from the debilitating side-effects associated with long term use of pharmaceuticals. I am convinced of the efficacy of Medical MJ and will not be denied its benefits.
